Roots Blower Maintenance Guide: Maximizing Operational Life

Proper preventative care extends blower operating life to 15+ years while preventing unscheduled factory shutdowns. Follow this comprehensive Roots Blower Maintenance Guide prepared by SAE field service engineers.

1. Daily Inspection Routine

  • Check oil levels in gear casing and drive-end sight glasses when blower is stopped.
  • Inspect operating pressure gauge to ensure system is within rated limits.
  • Check for unusual noise, knocking sounds, or excessive vibration.

2. Weekly Filter Care

Clean intake air filter elements using dry compressed air blowing from inside out. Replace dirty filter elements every 1,000 to 2,000 operating hours to avoid high suction vacuum losses.

3. Gear Oil Change Schedule

  • Initial Break-In Change: Replace synthetic/mineral gear oil after first 100 operating hours.
  • Routine Oil Change: Replace gear oil every 1,500 to 2,000 operating hours (or every 3-6 months).

4. V-Belt Alignment & Tensioning

Check V-belt tension after the first 24 hours of operation and monthly thereafter. Over-tensioning damages drive shaft bearings, while loose belts cause slippage and overheating.

5. Prevent Over-Pressure Operation

Ensure pressure relief valves (PRV) are set correctly to pop open if downstream valves close accidentally.
